Dear Convention Participants,

In 2018, we will be holding the OCEANS and Techno-Ocean meetings together as a joint convention in Kobe for the first time in ten years.

In Japan, recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in public attention towards marine-related science and technology, and our marine industries. We are therefore delighted to be able to plan the hosting of OCEANS’18 MTS/IEEE Kobe / Techno-Ocean 2018 (OTO’18) in such a progressive environment. The theme for OTO’18 has been provisionally set under the wording “Ocean Planet - It’s our home.” The oceans, which cover 70% of the earth’s surface, provide us with a wide variety of gifts including natural resources and energy, and we would like to use the convention to reconsider issues such as natural disasters and environmental concerns from the standpoint of the oceans. We also hope that by holding OTO’18 we will gain new opportunities to reconsider the importance of constructing and coordinating an international network under the changing international circumstances of present-times.

The Kobe Convention Center, which will be the venue for OTO’18, is conveniently located on Port Island, about 10 minutes from downtown Kobe - one of Japan’s foremost tourist destinations. It connects to downtown via an efficient ‘Port Liner’ rail transit system and includes the International Conference Center, International Exhibition Halls, hotels and other key facilities.

We look forward to welcoming you in 2018 at the OTO‘18 venue.

Experience the delights of Japan in Kobe

Japan offers the visitor extraordinary diversity. Side by side with a traditional culture preserved from the distant past lies a vibrant modern pop culture, most famously represented its anime. Even Japanese food, with sushi its most iconic example, is now recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Convention city Kobe exemplifies the rich nature of Japan, a port city surrounded by mountains and sea. Kobe has flourished as an international trading port since Japan’s late Heian Era (12th century), largely due to the enterprises of samurai leader Taira no Kiyomori in building the Port of Hyogo. Then, following Japan’s isolationist period and the port re-opening of 1868, Kobe began to whole-heartedly embrace other cultures from all over the world and thereby created its own unique identity. As such, this modern and stylish Japanese city, basked in natural surroundings, appeals to every visitor. This is where such champions of culinary culture as “Kobe Beef” and “Nada-no Sake (Japanese Sake)” are produced for fans worldwide. So please experience the delights of both Japan and Kobe when you visit.
